CTrain Service Information

May 18-21: 7 Avenue Closure – Red & Blue Line service disruptions

Sunnyside, 8 Street, 7 Street, 6 Street, 4 Street, 3 Street, 1 Street, Centre Street, City Hall/Bow Valley College, Victoria Park/Stampede, Erlton/Stampede, 39 Avenue, Bridgeland/Memorial, Downtown West/Kerby, Sunalta, Shaganappi Point, Westbrook

Monday, May 20 (all day)

What’s the short version?:
From Saturday, May 18 to the very early hours of Tuesday, May 21, 2024, all downtown stations along 7 Avenue, as well as Victoria Park/Stampede Station and a few surrounding stations, will be closed. Shuttle buses will replace CTrain service between affected stations, downtown included. Full CTrain service will be back up and running again before start of service on Tuesday, May 21

What to expect:

  • The Red Line will be closed between Sunnyside and 39 Avenue stations, with shuttle buses replacing train service between these stations, including all downtown stations (via shuttle stops on 6 Ave S and 9 Ave S), Victoria Park/Stampede Station, and Erlton/Stampede Station. View map.
    • You can transfer to the northbound (Tuscany) CTrain at Sunnyside Station, and the southbound (Somerset-Bridlewood) CTrain at 39 Avenue Station. 
       
  • The Blue Line will be closed between Sunalta and Bridgeland/Memorial stations. There will also be shuttle buses replacing train service to all downtown stations (via shuttle stops on 6 Ave S and 9 Ave S), as well as Westbrook Station and Shaganappi Point Station. View map.
    • You can transfer to the westbound (69 Street) CTrain at Westbrook Station, and the eastbound (Saddletowne) CTrain at Bridgeland/Memorial Station.
    •  If you’re heading eastbound towards City Centre by CTrain, consider transferring to the shuttle bus at Westbrook Station. Stay on the train though if you’re heading towards Shaganappi Point Station or Sunalta Station. Speaking of which…
       
  • IF YOU’RE HEADING WESTBOUND TO SUNALTA STATION – you’ll need to catch a separate shuttle!  View map.
    • The Sunalta shuttle also stops at Downtown West/Kerby (where you can transfer from the Red Line shuttle), and the bus stop on 6 Ave SW at 11 St SW (where you can transfer from the Blue Line shuttle). 

The shuttles for both lines will travel westbound along 6 Ave S, and eastbound along 9 Ave S downtown. 

Full CTrain service will be back up and running again on Tuesday, May 21.

Why are we doing this?

We know these closures can have an impact on your travel, which is why we try to keep them as minimally disruptive as possible. That’s also why they’re so important – because doing preventative work and maintenance now can ensure we’re providing Calgarians with a safe, reliable, and efficient transit system.

Some work can be completed while keeping the trains on track, but there are certain projects that are just too big, or can’t share the space safely while trains are in service, and they require fully closing off sections of the line. Occasionally, a power cut is required to carry out specific work, which also means we need to close the line to train travel.

This long weekend closure provides the opportunity to get a lot of the annual preventative maintenance work and inspections completed on this significant section of the system. The projects on this weekend’s list include:

  • Track repairs and rail replacements
  • Crossing replacement at 8 St SW
  • Lighting maintenance
  • Regular preventative maintenance of the switch machine, help phones, and communications equipment
  • Concrete repairs in the Cemetery Hill tunnel
  • Track work and other projects near Victoria Park/Stampede Station and the Big 4
  • Fire suppression and surface drainage inspections and maintenance 
  • and other projects, as time allows.
